October 9 marks the 17th annual World Sight Day. To celebrate, Lions around the world are focusing their attention on eliminating causes of preventable blindness and improving sight with special vision-related service projects throughout the entire month of October.
This year, International President Joe Preston will meet with Lions in Iceland to present medical equipment purchased through a US$70,000 SightFirst grant from Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) to the Department of Ophthalmology at Landspítali – the National University Hospital of Iceland.
The donated medical equipment will help identify childhood vision disorders at an earlier stage than previously possible and will help save the sight of children throughout Iceland.
“Lions Clubs International has championed the blind and visually impaired for decades,” said Lions International President Joe Preston. “Lions World Sight Day is an opportunity to reflect on our achievements as we continue our commitment to the fight against preventable blindness.”
In observance of World Sight Day, Lions and LCIF partner Johnson & Johnson Vision Care are also expanding Sight for Kids – a vision screening initiative designed to protect the sight of children – to Europe and Africa for the first time since the program’s creation.
From Iceland to Turkey and Kenya and back, track Lions’ World Sight Day activities this week as we move toward our goal of eliminating preventable blindness.
